Winchester brings out the smiles

When Shurwayne Winchester performs everyone is guaranteed to smile. The times he has performed in the Cayman Islands is testament to that. Along with his energetic performances, his interaction with audiences is always amusing.

Like many soca stars, he is Trinidadian, born in Tobago 44 years ago. When he was 12, he entered talent contests, always doing well and impressing even if he didn’t win. His ability to both pen lyrics and sing them with a maturity far beyond his age, inspired him to compete against some of the best in the industry, among them veterans such as the calypso queen Denyse Plummer and Calypso Monarchs Cro Cro and Luta.

Winchester has won numerous Calypso Monarch and Road March titles. In 2004, having already made a name for himself with tracks such as ‘Baby Love’ and ‘Under My Spell’, he won the Road March title with ‘The Band Coming’. It wasn’t a fluke as the next year he won again with ‘Dead or Alive’.

In 2006 Winchester won both the Power and Groovy soca Monarch titles with ‘Can't Wait’ and ‘Don't Stop’. Awards for song writing and performances have come at regular intervals ever since and since forming his own band, Y.O.U. (Yes One Unit), the fun has never stopped. Winchester has collaborated with big names including Maxi Priest on ‘Make It Yours’ and Serani on ‘All I Need’.
