Young women to get scholarship boost

By Lindsey Turnbull

Women between the ages of 18 and 35 who are looking to further their education at either the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) or the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) can apply for a CI$2,000 per year scholarship thanks to the Corrine Thompson Memorial Scholarship offered by the Business and Professional Women’s (BPW) Club of Grand Cayman. The scholarship will commence this autumn for the 2018 – 2019 year of study and runs for two years of study.

The scholarship is named after Ms Corrine Thompson who, with her husband Alfred Lawrence Thompson, established their retail business A.L. Thompson’s in 1950. Ms. Corrine Thompson was BPW's Second Vice President in Grand Cayman, a club that was established in Grand Cayman in August 1976 as the local chapter of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women.

Paola Juarez-Robinson, President of the BPW Grand Cayman gave some background to the scholarship.

“The Corrine Thompson Memorial Scholarship was first awarded to Juliana O’Connor Connolly [Cayman’s Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands],” she advised. “In 1997 Mrs O'Connor-Connolly became Cayman's first woman Minister and served in the capacity as the Minister of Community Affairs, Sports, Women, Youth and Culture. What an achievement! We are so proud that BPW was able to contribute to her educational platforms.”

Ms Juarez-Robinson confirmed that BPW aimed to develop professional and leadership potential for women at all levels, through mentoring, networking, skill building, economic empowerment programmes, and projects around the world, “hence the importance of this scholarship as an annual initiative for the Grand Cayman BPW Club,” she said.

The BPW has already forged links with the UCCI, having this year sponsored the launch of the UCCI Social Work training programme.

Ms Juarez-Robinson said she recently reached out to both ICCI's Admissions and Marketing Director Robert Lynch and UCCI's Director of Marketing, PR and Alumni, Kristel Sanchez to make the announcement that the club had officially opened its scholarship application process, with a deadline to submit applications set at 15 July, 2018.

Applicants must be female, aged 18 to 35 years, of good character and academic standing with a proven need for financial assistance to further their education. Anyone interested in pursuing an application can contact the BPW via email: or via Facebook: FACEBOOK.COM/BPWGrandCayman

The BPW is able to provide finances for the scholarship via fundraising. Their annual fundraisers include a salsa night, which takes place on 29th June, 2018, where everyone is welcome to have fun and contribute to this worthy cause.
