The West Indies Breakout League 2025 has begun in Trinidad with the final scheduled for May 10. It is a new competition to give youngsters a chance to shine in T20 cricket.
The six-team event began with Guyana Rainforest Rangers taking on Windward Islands Infernos on April 25, in Tarouba. A total of 17 games will be played in the competition, with all matches being played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
Several international players including Joshua da Silva (Trinidad and Tobago Legions), Alick Athanaze (Windward Islands Infernos), and Mikyle Louis (Leeward Islands Thunder) are competing in the tournament, which is aimed at spotting emerging talent from across the Caribbean.
As the first ball was bowled the President of Cricket West Indies marked the occasion by emphasising the tournament’s long-term importance to the region’s cricketing future. He described the league as a necessary and strategic move to reshape how talent is developed in the Caribbean.
CWI’s President Dr. Kishore Shallow said: “This league is a bold, forward-looking investment in the future of West Indies cricket. We are ushering in a new generation of T20 cricketers, and today is the first step on that journey.”
Players eligible to participate must be under 30 at the start of the tournament, have played fewer than 40 List A T20 matches, and fewer than 10 international T20s, ensuring a focus on developing new talent. Each team is closely affiliated with a Caribbean Premier League franchise, providing players with an opportunity to showcase their skills on a larger stage and progress their careers.
