CARNEY CLAIMS VICTORY IN CANADA

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has doubled down against his American counterpart President Donald Trump as he led his Liberal Party to victory in Canada’s federal elections on Monday April 28th.

With 343 seats at stake, victory was declared by Mr Carney with the Liberals leading in 168 seats just short of the 172 needed for a majority.

Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat early Tuesday. Mr Poilievre, who is described as a MAGA-admirer, also lost his seat in the election.

The Canadian election was conducted under a cloud of souring relations with its neighbour and main trading partner, the United States, caused by a series of threats by the US President Donald Trump.

Mr Trump has trolled Canada with severe tariffs, threatening to annex it, and referring to Canadian prime ministers as ‘governor’ in line with his claim to make the country the 51st American state.

Prime Minister Carney, a former central bank governor of Canada and the Bank of England, was only sworn in March when he initially took over from then leader Justin Trudeau who had announced he was stepping down amidst an internal Cabinet struggle and poor poll showings.

Mr Carney then called snap elections for April 28th nine days after he was sworn in.

“Who’s ready to stand up for Canada with me?” he asked on Tuesday morning in a victory address while at the same time directing his remarks to his US nemesis, President Trump.

“As I have been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never, ever happen,” he stated.

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal,” Prime Minister Carney declared, adding, “But we should never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves, and above all we have to take care of each other.”
