On Sunday 1 August, at around 10.45am a report was received by the 911 Centre of something falling from the sky out over the horizon in line of sight from the Westin Hotel and dark smoke being seen right after, it was suggested by the caller that it might have been a small plane.
Emergency services were alerted including, Cayman Islands Airport Authority (CIAA), Air Traffic Control (ATC), the Fire Service, the Police (RCIPS) and the Coast Guard (CICG).
Police officers attended the Westin and spoke to witnesses who confirmed the initial report but were unable to offer any additional information.
CICG established contact with multiple vessels at sea in an attempt to gather additional information, none of the vessels reported seeing anything fall into the ocean or subsequent smoke.
A search extending out to 24 miles off the shoreline was conducted by the RCIPS and the CICG with the assistance of a private citizen who offered his aircraft to help with the search, however no debris, oil, or other items indicative of an aircraft landing in the water was observed.
Further enquiries by the 911 Centre with the CIAA, the ATC and the CICG with United States Coast Guard District 7 did not reveal the activation of any aircraft emergency beacon within the Cayman Islands region.
The report made has not been substantiated.
