St Lucia gun crime is shocking

St Lucia is scenic but its gun crime wave is alarming

St Lucia is world renowned as a tranquil vacation spot popular with honeymooners but it is also fast becoming notorious for serious crime. There have already been 68 homicides this year and last weekend alone there were multiple shootings. Commissioner of Police, Crusita Descartes-Pelius gave a statement Monday following a bloody weekend that saw 16 people shot in three incidents, two fatally.

“As we head into the festive season, we are realizing unprecedented levels of violence in every sector of the island. Despite significant strides by the members of the Royal St Lucia Police Force, we continue to observe increases in homicides, gun-related activity and other serious offences,” said Descartes-Pelius.

“We will take back our streets and make St Lucia safe for all visitors and citizens. To the individuals intent on wreaking havoc, you will be weeded out. There is no room for you or your behaviour and the organization which I lead will succeed in putting a stop to your actions.

“St Lucia has no place other than incarceration for those who wish to operate with impunity.”

She outlined that the RSPLF had made strides in recovering illegal firearms and that covert and overt patrol strategies have succeeded in making arrests.

She implored members of the public to provide the police with the necessary information to bring perpetrators to justice.

“The time to take back our country from these criminal elements is now. Enough is enough,” she added.
