100WF partners with MLA Austin Harris to host “Ready to Work” panel discussion

100 Women in Finance, in partnership with Austin Harris, MLA for Prospect, Councillor in the Ministry of Human Resources, Immigration, Community Affairs, International Trade & Investment, Aviation, & Maritime Affairs and Work Opportunities Residency Cayman (WORC), recently hosted an in-depth panel discussion entitled "Ready to Work" addressing career opportunities for students at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

The panel discussion was held at the campus of UCCI and moderated by Christina Bodden, 100WF Board member and Maples Group Partner. Ms Bodden posed questions to Councillor Harris and Diane Conolly, National Training and Development Manager for WORC, on best practice approaches on work force readiness for recent graduates. Lara Deysel, Director in Asset Management at KPMG and Jennifer O'Leary, owner of Mangrove, each 100WF Pre-Career Initiative Committee members, were also on hand to provide career experience to the students.

Councillor Harris led the roundtable discussion for the group by giving an overview of the current workforce landscape, and explaining the initial steps which Caymanian students should be taking when they are ready to enter the workforce. He spoke about the vision of WORC and its success in identifying and placing Caymanians in jobs and careers.

“The vision of WORC is leading the pursuit of full Caymanian employment and economic prosperity for all through service excellence. WORC is one of the greatest achievements of this Ministry, providing young Caymanians with an opportunity to be recognized and placed within the local job market. Registering with WORC and having your valued skills recognized in a particular job market is a crucial first step which young Caymanians should take when they are ready to enter the job market. I encourage you to partner with the Ministry and WORC by registering and working with us in your career path”, said Councillor Harris.

Diane Conolly provided a detailed overview of available vacancies for young Caymanians in the industries of Hospitality, Financial Services, Healthcare and Engineering and walked through necessary steps to start the process of registration on the JobsCayman portal.

Following the discussion, the floor opened to an interactive discussion with the students on their career goals, which ranged from careers in finance, hospitality, healthcare and design.

Christina Bodden, Maples Group Partner and 100WF Board Member said, “The 100WF Pre-Career Initiative supports aspiring young Caymanian students who are either ready to continue their tertiary education or are “Ready to Work”. As our mentees grow, we will continue to offer programming that grows with them preparing them for the next step in their career journey.”

100WF Pre-Career Initiative is a strategic community partnership between 100 Women in Finance and the Cayman Islands Ministry of Education, which provides support, educational guidance and opportunity to young women aged 13-25 years, attending local educational institutions in the Cayman Islands.
