Beacon Farms held its inaugural Golf Invitational on 20 June, raising essential funds for its recovery programme that provides jobs in agricultures to Caymanians in recovery from substance abuse.
Sixteen teams took part in the competition at the North Sound Golf Club, with the team from TRAC Automotive taking first place, with AureumRe and PwC taking prizes for second and third.
“There are no mulligans in real life, but giving people a second chance to rebuild their lives is the purpose of Beacon Farms,” said Sandy Urquhart, Beacon Farms chief executive officer. “We are grateful to all who helped make our first annual golf tournament such a success. The funds raised are vital to our ability to continue providing a safe, sober work environment and helping people get their best shot at recovery.”
The Beacon Farms golf invitational was supported by gold sponsor Artex Risk Solutions, alongside silver sponsor Tower Marketing who also provided event logistics, and bronze sponsor Wheaton Precious Metals. Hole sponsors included CUC, CG Britcay and Cayman Cigar Company who offered their locally-made Mariner cigars to players at hole 12.
While the hole-in-one prize of a Changan car went unclaimed, sponsors TRAC Automotive generously donated a consolation prize to the player closest to the pin on hole 9, the shortest par hole on the course.
“We would like to thank all our sponsors, including those who donated raffle prizes, and all the players for joining us on the golf course,” said Urquhart. “We hope you will all join us again next year for round two. Our aim is for Beacon Farms to become self-sufficient in the coming years, but until that point we continue to rely on the generosity of our Cayman community.”
As a non-profit organisation, Beacon Farms is an unusual position of having the ability to generate revenue through sales of agricultural products and services. Beacon Farms sells fresh produce and manufactured products such as coconut oil and flour at its farm shop on site in North Side as well as to local restaurants and stores. Beacon Farms also offers land improvement services to farmers and landowners looking to improve the quality of their soil.
