A new art exhibition at the MInd’s Eye Centre brings together memory, movement and identity through the lens of Cayman-based artists.
Launched on 30th May and running until 30th August, ‘Circles of Time’ explores the interwoven threads of ancestry, cultural memory and temporal movement through a selection of contemporary art, films, paintings and material artifacts.
Included in the exhibition are select works from ‘Miss Lassie’, whose visionary practice provides what organizers say is, ‘an anchor’.
“The collection invites viewers into a space where memory is not a static archive but a living current, looping backward and curling forward in motion. The featured pieces hover between dream and recollection, ancestral vision and the present and together they suggest that time is not a straight line but a circle,” noted curators of the exhibition Rita Powell and Rory Marchant-Kelly.
Artists featured in the Circles of Time art exhibition include:
1. Cera-Tan, a multi-disciplinary Cayman based South African artist who interweaves fine art, storytelling and textile traditions.
2. Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, a distinguished Caymanian artist, poet and educator whose multi-disciplinary practice explores themes of identity, history and cultural memory.
3. Randy Collette, a self-taught Caymanian artist, musician and educator with a rich and varied cannon of work deeply roots in his Rastafarian beliefs and Caymanian heritage.
4. Nicol Durrant, a Jamaican-born dancer, choreographer and educator whose work centers on Afro-Caribbean movement traditions and cultural storytelling.
5. Shemila Eden, a creative writer, producer and co-founder of ZEAL, a Cayman-based visual production studio that specializes in dramatic storytelling and Bruce Gordon, co-founder of ZEAL and an artist, as well as a creative director based in the Cayman Islands.
6. Heather Holt, a seasoned photographer who received her formal training in visual communications and photojournalism at Ohio University
7. Kara Julian, a Caymanian artist whose vibrant and versatile practice spans fine art, hand painted glassware, murals and community based art experiences.
“The selection of works by Gladwyn K. ‘Miss Lassie’ Bush offer a spiritual and ancestral thread within Circles of Time,” according to organizers.
A visionary and self-taught Caymanian artist, Miss Lassie drew from scripture, dreams, storytelling and lived experiences. Her work can also be seen throughout her dwelling, which sits opposite the Mind’s Eye Centre, where her choice pieces are now on display.
