Art show to launch new direction for local artist

Terry Grimes has made a name for herself on the local art scene with her atmospheric acrylics depicting landscapes of her favourite places - the Barkers area of West Bay, the Brac and the Blue Mountains of Jamaica - but now this multi-talented artist has embarked upon a new phase in her artistic journey. Showcasing a stunning new collection of abstract art at her upcoming show, ‘Emerging Images’, taking place at Calypso Grill on 14th December from 4pm, Terry is excited to share her new art work with visitors to the show.

Terry gave some background as to why she decided to work in this new genre of art.

“May this year I travelled with some friends to the States to enjoy a painting vacation and they encouraged me to experiment with my artwork by adding cold wax with oils, which produced beautiful layered artwork that dried quickly for an oil. When I returned to Cayman, I began experimenting using my acrylics with various gels and mediums to see what would happen," she explained.

Starting with small canvases, Terry’s confidence grew along with the size of the artwork she then started to produce.

“I began really by just playing around to see what type of effect I could create, layering paint and making marks on small-sized canvases. This was a real change in direction for me as, up until this point, I had always just painted what I saw. This is a different way of painting that requires a freeing up of the mind so you get quite lost in the work, and I absolutely love it,” she confirmed.

Terry added that the challenge with this type of artwork was knowing when to stop painting.

“When you work on this layering process you really need to be selective, adding and subtracting paint as you go, but overall I am finding myself saying over and over: ‘more paint!’"

The result has been another atmospheric collection, with the viewer able to interpret the colourful pieces in their own way, with Terry capturing light, shade and colour on each canvas.

Recently, Terry found she had got to the stage where she had about twenty pieces of art of all shapes and sizes that she felt ready to exhibit, with canvases she is currently working on around 18” by 24”.

“I’ve held a number of art shows at our Calypso Grill restaurant here in West Bay and they have been really successful,” Terry stated. “It’s a lovely location in which to enjoy the artwork, as well as catch up with friends at this afternoon soiree. I would love everyone to come up and enjoy the art, have a nibble and a glass of wine and chat with me, because I’m really excited about what I’ve created so far.”

Emerging Images takes place on Saturday 14th December from 4pm and all artwork will be for sale.
