Cayman Islands Sailing Club Champions Success at Annual Jammin Regatta in Montego Bay

Sports 03 Jan, 2024 Follow News

Competitors from 4 countries competed for the Jammin 2023 J22 title.

The Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) proudly announces their remarkable triumph at the annual Jammin Regatta held in the picturesque waters of Montego Bay, Jamaica, from December 1st to 3rd, 2023. Despite facing logistical challenges due to unforeseen circumstances, two teams from the CISC J22 class showcased outstanding skill and resilience in a competitive field comprising teams from Canada, the USA, and Jamaica.

The regatta encountered an unexpected turn when the arrival of the team’s own boats was delayed owing to the Seaboard ship breakdown. Consequently, through a random draw, the teams found themselves sailing with club boats. Undeterred by this setback, the CISC teams swiftly adapted, rigging their own equipment, and ensuring necessary adjustments were made to partake in the competition.

Team Yahoo, captained by the experienced skipper Bruce Johnson, a three-time Jammin Regatta victor, demonstrated their expertise by securing a commendable placement within the top five. Meanwhile, Team Adjusted, under the leadership of skipper Mike Farrington, along with crew members, Karin McGrath and Joe Palone, emerged as the champions for the second consecutive year, showcasing unparalleled consistency and skill despite the unforeseen challenges.

The regatta witnessed thrilling sailing conditions characterized by shifting winds, elevating the excitement for both participants and spectators. Over the course of the event, a total of nine races were completed, allowing for one discard.

Reflecting on their success, Mike Farrington, skipper of Team Adjusted, expressed, “We always relish the well-executed Jammin Regatta. While racing can be unpredictable, our strategic maneuvers played a pivotal role in our success. We eagerly anticipate next year’s event and aim to bring more sailors from the J22 fleet for a competitive showing in 2024.”

Deidre Redfern, the Communications Officer at CISC, remarked, “The dedication and adaptability showcased by our teams at the Jammin Regatta truly exemplify the spirit of sailing and the strength of our community. We are immensely proud of their achievements despite the logistical hurdles faced.”
