‘CAYMANKIND’ FOR JAMAICA

Editorial Team

Rebuilding in Jamaica - not just repairing - will be a mammoth task after the hammering the country was subjected to by massive, historical Hurricane Melissa.

Understandably, it will take some time for Jamaica to fully process the ordeal that it has just suffered.

It’s heartwarming to see the outpouring of Caymankind for Jamaica.

Our response to our neighbouring countries at a time of need is a record of which Cayman can be rightfully proud as we dutifully respond - not just to calls for help - but more importantly, the need for help where we see it.

We are reminded of when Cayman was struck by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 Jamaica and many others came to our assistance. It’s what good neighbours do - more so in the case of Jamaica where our bonds run deep along family and historical lines.

When Hurricane Ivan slammed into Cayman 21 years ago it was also a Category 5 monster then, packing maximum winds of 150 mph. But Cayman survived, and to paraphrase a well-known song, “we got by with a little help from our friends” as we took on the challenge to repair and rebuild.

Consider then the plight of Jamaica battered not just by a Category 5 behemoth, but with the intensity of winds of up to a bewildering 185 miles an hour.

So now it’s Caymankind for Jamaica. We applaud all the efforts thus far.

Yesterday for Cayman, today for Jamaica. Who knows what the future holds?

The hurricane season ends on November 30th.

None of us in the hurricane belt is out of the woods yet.

Stay prepared.

Remember, it takes just one.
