CICG Assists Cayman fishing vessel In distress

The Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) is providing an update on continuing efforts to resolve an ongoing vessel in distress report, involving Cayman-flagged Fishing Vessel (FV) Cardvern



A report of a vessel in distress was initially received just after 8:18AM on Sunday 1 June. The 36-foot vessel, carrying three persons, had lost a propeller and was experiencing difficulties, at coordinates 18.6350° N, 84.1189° W, in the vicinity of Rosario Bank, which is approximately 159.37 nautical miles from Grand Cayman.



Upon receiving the distress call from the ship’s captain, the CICG Operations Rescue Coordination Centre (ORCC) initiated international notifications protocols, including:

• The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in the United Kingdom

• The U.S. Coast Guard District 7 in Miami, Florida

• The Central American Search and Rescue Centre (COCESNA) in Honduras



As the vessel is located within Honduras’ designated Search and Rescue Region (SRR), the Honduran authorities assumed responsibility for rendering assistance to FV Cardvern.



At around 8:27PM, Monday 2 June, the captain of FV Cardvern advised the ORCC that Honduran authorities had contacted them and informed them that assistance has been arranged to tow the vessel to Swan Islands (78.68 nautical miles from distress vessel).



The Cayman Islands Coast Guard has since communicated with COCESNA and can confirm this development.



The CICG remains in close communication with our international partners and continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of those on board. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
