After the overwhelming success of the inaugural Derek Larner Memorial Run in January 2025 — with over 600 participants and $16,000 raised for two local charities — the community event returns on Sunday 26th October 2025.

The proceeds from the inaugural run were donated to Jasmine Palliative and Hospice Care and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS), two organisations that play an important role in supporting those in the Cayman Islands’ community affected by cancer and are close to the Larner family’s heart. Derek’s wife, Laura Larner, was proud to present donation cheques of $8,000 to each organisation on Tuesday 13th May, with Stef Prieto accepting on behalf of Jasmine and Dave O’Driscoll for CICS. The impact of the event has been felt well beyond race day, and organisers are hoping to build on that momentum this October, raising funds for the same two crucial charities.

The Derek Larner Memorial Run honours the life and legacy of Derek Larner, who died from stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 202, at the age of 56. A passionate athlete, coach, and mentor, Derek was a well-loved fixture in the running community in Cayman, being the founder of 345 Athletics Club (now Vision Academy 345) and Race Caribbean and encouraging countless athletes to pursue their potential, both in athletics and in life.

Reflecting on the impact of January’s event, Derek’s wife Laura Larner shared, “More than 600 people joined us in January to honour Derek, and it meant the world to Scarlett and I, along with Derek’s sons Tim, Phil and Dave. We were deeply moved by the love and support. It was emotional, but so uplifting. We’re already looking forward to coming together again this October.

This event is all about keeping Derek’s memory alive, celebrating his legacy, and giving back to the local community. We’re proud to support Jasmine and CICS – two amazing organisations that help families facing cancer in our community.

Derek believed in living life to the fullest – through running, community, and connection. We want to carry that forward, promote active lifestyles, and make sure no one faces cancer alone.”

Trevor Murphy, a close friend of Derek’s and Race Caribbean Director, added, “I was overwhelmed by the turnout and support we saw at the first race. Derek had a unique way of bringing people together, and that spirit was felt in every step taken. This October, we’re building on that momentum and hope to create something even more powerful, an event that honours Derek and uplifts our community year after year.”

This event is a continuous tribute to Derek’s enduring impact on the running and fitness community in the Cayman Islands.
