DES Successfully Concludes 2026 Summer School Programme

The Department of Education Services (DES) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its 2026 Summer School Programme, held from 7 to 24 July. Now in its fourth year, the three-week initiative was expanded to include government primary school students in Years 1 to 6, providing targeted literacy and numeracy support across the Cayman Islands.

The programme was delivered across ten school hubs by 119 school-based staff, including site coordinators, teachers and assistant teachers, with additional support from two school counsellors.

Focused on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy, the programme provided targeted English and Mathematics instruction in small-group settings. Students also participated in STEM, cultural and enrichment activities, including traditional Caymanian crafts, storytelling, and educational visits to sites such as the National Museum and the Mosquito Research and Control Unit.

Student feedback reflected the programme’s positive impact, with 87% reporting increased confidence in literacy and numeracy. Parent feedback was equally encouraging, with 100% of survey respondents saying they would enrol their child again next year. Eighty-two per cent reported the programme had a very positive impact on their child’s learning, while the remaining 18% said it had a positive impact.

“I was especially impressed by the small class sizes, which created a more personal and supportive learning environment. The programme balanced education with fun through heritage activities, field trips, and hands-on experiences. It was a great way for my son to become familiar with his new school, helping him feel more comfortable and confident before the start of the new academic year,” said parent Alecia Chin Yee.

DES Director, Mr. Mark Ray, highlighted the commitment of staff and the Department’s focus on continually strengthening the programme.

“Our Summer School Programme is made possible by the dedication of our teachers, support staff, school leaders, and Ministry and DES officers, who work tirelessly to provide students with meaningful learning experiences in a supportive environment. We are proud of the commitment shown across our schools and will continue listening to feedback from students, parents and staff so we can strengthen the programme and ensure it continues to meet the needs of our learners.”
