Fry Jack event had them hooked

Cayman Brac reeled in community spirit as the Rotary Club hosted its Annual Fry Jack Fishing Tournament, a tradition that has been staged for four decades.

This year’s theme, ‘Get Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs’, put youth front and centre, with new partners joining the cause for the first time: the Ministry of District Administration and Home Affairs, Boys 2 Men, and the National Drug Council.

A group of six adults and ten boys travelled from Grand Cayman, led by long time Brac supporter Simon Miller. After speaking with local fishermen, several captains stepped up and offered their boats so the kids could get the full tournament experience. Captain Curtis Connor, Conrad Martin and Miguel Martin launched from Scott Dock, taking 18 people aboard. Families across the Brac also joined in, bringing the fleet to nine vessels.

By the end of the day, anglers hauled in a whopping 165 pounds of jack, with 20 children and 21 adults taking part. Every boat donated its catch to the community fish fry at Panama Canal, where everyone enjoyed fry fish, fritters and swankie — a true Brac celebration.

In the children’s division, the winners were:

- Youngest Boy Angler: Isiah Scott

- Youngest Female Angler: Prisanic Scott Smith

- Heaviest Catch: Bradyn Bodden

In the adult category, the grand prize of $500 went to Evol Miller, fishing with a crew of five aboard the boat Funny Shoe.

Organisers say the tournament’s success reflects the strength of the Brac community and its sponsors. The Rotary Club thanked everyone for helping fulfil this year’s Rotary theme: ‘Create Lasting Impact’.
