Justin Greaves made his maiden ton

Virat Kohli passed 15,000 ODI runs

Justin Greaves struck a superb century as West Indies posted a challenging 295 for seven against India in the first One-Day International in India.

But it was batting maestro Virat Kohli and skipper Shubman Gill who displayed their mastery in 50-over format with virtuoso hundreds as India subdued the West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Kohli became the second batter in history to register 15,000 runs in one-dayers after Sachin Tendulkar.

India lead the three-match series 1-0, after Kohli (139 not out, 10x4, 9x6) and Gill (110, 107 balls) milked 150 runs for the second wicket to help the hosts scale down 296 in 41.4 overs, ending up at 300 for 2.

At least Greaves had the satisfaction of hitting his maiden effort of 101. The 32-year-old Barbadian has played for both Barbados and the Combined Campuses and Colleges in West Indian domestic cricket.

A seam-bowling all-rounder, Greaves was among four West Indies players to make their Test debuts on the tour of Australia in 2023-24.

Greaves had made his ODI debut much before playing a Test. A month shy of turning 28, he played his first ODI in January 2022, when Ireland toured the West Indies. He finished the series with three low scores, and without getting to bowl a single delivery. But he’s improved considerably since then and is now a vital member of the ODI team.
