Lyons is half of celebrity duo

One of the most celebrated soca marriages in the Caribbean is Fay-Ann Lyons and husband Bunji Garlin who collectively always whip their audiences into a frenzy. Both are established artists in their own right and when they perform together they are an unstoppable force.

The couple performed with their Viking band last week in their Trinidad homeland in another faultless display of soca magic.

The 2013 Soul Train Award winner showed off his lyrical prowess and freestyled to many of his songs, much to the delight of patrons. She followed suit, mesmerising the crowd in her unique style.

Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez was born in Point Fortin on Nov. 5, 1980 is also known as the Lyon Empress, Mane the Matriarch and the Silver Surfer. Her parents are entertainers too so it was inevitable that she would follow suit.

So it is no wonder that Lyons is a three-time Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Road March champion (2003, 2008, 2009) and the 2009 International Soca Monarch and International Groovy Soca Monarch champion.

She created history again by winning the International Soca Monarch for the first time in 2009, as the first female to win the Power category, and the first individual to win the Power, Groovy and People's Choice awards on Carnival Friday. She also went on to win the Carnival Road March that year, becoming the first soca artist to win all three titles. She is also the first and only woman to accomplish that feat while pregnant. Fay-Ann and Bunji became parents to daughter Syri on Feb. 28, 2009, just a few weeks after Carnival.

She writes many of her own songs, having learnt from her father, Superblue, who has won the Carnival Road March title nine times.

Fay-Ann's compositions have earned many music awards including Female Songwriter of the Year and she has also received honours from the Soca Awards Organisation for her music.
