Rotary Sunset Shines a Light on Three Quiet Community Champions

There was an easy warmth inside Bonfire Restaurant on Wednesday 12 August as the Rotary Club of the Cayman Islands Sunset gathered for one of its most heartfelt traditions — recognising the people who quietly strengthen the club’s work behind the scenes. The Friends of Rotary Welcome & Recognition Evening isn’t a grand ceremony or a formal gala. It’s a simple pause in the club’s regular meeting to honour three individuals whose steady support has made a real difference in the community.

This year, Rotary Sunset celebrated Aneisha Walters, Suzette Forbes, and Greggon Gordon — three people who have stepped forward time and again to lend their hands, their time, and their enthusiasm to Rotary projects across the Cayman Islands. They are not Rotarians (at least not yet), but they embody the spirit of service that Rotary values so deeply.

Club President Marie Martin led the recognitions with her trademark sincerity, speaking of the trio not as occasional helpers but as partners in service. “Our Friends of Rotary remind us that service is most powerful when shared,” she said. “Aneisha, Suzette, and Greggon have stood beside us in meaningful ways, strengthening our projects and uplifting our impact in the community. Their willingness to give of themselves reflects the very heart of Rotary.”

Each honouree brings something unique to the table. Walters has become a familiar face at community events, always ready to pitch in wherever needed. Forbes is known for her reliability and upbeat spirit, often stepping forward before anyone asks. Gordon lends both creativity and commitment, contributing to projects that require thoughtful hands and a steady presence. Together, they represent the kind of quiet leadership that keeps community work moving.

The Friends of Rotary programme is designed for exactly these individuals — people who share Rotary’s ideals and enjoy being part of service projects, social gatherings, and the camaraderie that naturally forms around shared purpose. Friends participate in activities, build relationships with Rotarians, and often discover that they enjoy the rhythm of service enough to consider membership down the road. But whether they join or simply continue supporting the club in their own way, their involvement strengthens the community.

Wednesday’s  recognitions were simple, sincere, and full of genuine appreciation. There were smiles, warm applause, and that familiar Rotary sense of fellowship — the feeling that everyone in the room is pulling in the same direction. No elaborate staging, no formal speeches. Just a club taking a moment to say thank you to three people who have quietly become part of its heartbeat.
