Senior Fitness & More Camp Promotes Movement, Mindfulness, Self-Love, and Meaningful Connections
From August 11–15, 2025, the Creative Space at the Intergenerational HUB will host the first-ever Fitness N More Camp for Seniors held by the Department of Sports, — a unique wellness program designed exclusively for individuals aged 65 and above.
Developed by Camp Director Merta Day for Department of Sports with the generous support and sponsorship of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture & Heritage, and CUC. Also, donation of coaches lunches by Welly’s. The camp offers an energizing blend of fitness routines, cognitive stimulation, creative expression, and life skills activities — all aimed at improving physical health, sharpening the mind, and fostering emotional well-being.
Initially planned for 18 participants, the camp expanded its capacity to 20 due to overwhelming demand, with a special final day accommodating up to 32 registered with max participants daily up to 21. This was to ensure participants from all districts were given an opportunity. The sessions run daily from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, with an extended and celebratory program on Friday.
A Holistic Approach to Senior Wellness
Inspired by the success of last year’s youth-oriented “Fitness N More” camp, this senior-focused edition has been specially tailored to meet the needs of older adults. Daily activities include:
• Moderate Fitness & Balance Movement: Dance-based routines designed to stimulate both body and brain.
• Art & Creativity: Including a National Gallery-led art session and a cupcake decorating workshop by Kays Treats.
• Cognitive Boosters: General quizzes, brain games, puzzles, and scavenger hunts.
• Cultural Connection: National Pride & Heritage activities.
• Life Skills for Wellness: Mindfulness exercises, problem-solving tasks, and discussions on emotional health.
• Nutrition & Lifestyle Education - Material provided by Tamara Whorms-Riley of HSA : Practical guidance on balanced eating, hydration, and healthy habits.
• Self-Love & Self-Care Presentation – By Angela Sealey: A thought-provoking session encouraging participants to embrace themselves fully, practice kindness toward their own mind and body, set healthy boundaries, and take actions that support their physical, psychological, and spiritual growth. The talk explored how self-love looks different for everyone, and how it can be cultivated through mindfulness, healthy relationships, balanced nutrition, and giving oneself permission to rest and recharge.
A Department of Sports Coach - Tristan Wesenhagen - explained the vision behind the program:
“Our goal is to give this age group the time, space, and attention they deserve. We’re not just making them move — we’re helping them keep their minds active too. From warm-ups to nutrition tips to conversations about self-love, every activity is designed to gently remind participants of healthy habits they may already know, but sometimes forget to practice.”
More Than Just Exercise:
The camp focuses on mobility, strength, and balance — not in terms of lifting heavy weights, but in preserving independence and reducing fall risks. As the coach notes:
“Your muscles support your bones, and that becomes even more important as we age. By combining movement with practical nutrition advice — like plating half your meal with vegetables, a quarter with protein, and a quarter with starch — we’re giving seniors the tools to maintain their well-being in everyday life.”
A Space for Joy and Connection:
Beyond health benefits, the camp emphasizes fun and social engagement. Ice-breaker games, gratitude exercises, and opportunities to share stories ensure that every participant feels included, uplifted, and part of a vibrant community.
