The Cayman Islands’ Energy Project Bidding Process Demands Transparency

The selection of six companies more than 2 years ago for the Cayman Islands’ energy project has sparked concerns that warrant scrutiny. As the island transitions to sustainable energy sources, it’s imperative that the bidding process is transparent, fair, and inclusive of all qualified entities.

Questions linger about the bidder selection process, particularly regarding the limited number of companies chosen and potential advantages afforded to certain parties. Notably, the current energy company has allegedly acquired over 100 acres of land for a large solar farm, which may have unfairly disadvantaged other potential bidders. Furthermore, the departure of key personnel involved in the process raises concerns about the integrity and fairness of the process.

Given these concerns, re-examining the bidding process and considering re-tendering the project is prudent. This would enable new entities, potentially willing and qualified, to participate and bring innovative solutions to the table. The Cayman Islands government and relevant authorities should provide clarity on the bidding process, ensuring it’s transparent, fair, and competitive.

The People of the Cayman Islands Deserve Answers

To restore confidence in the process, the following questions need to be addressed:

- How was the bidder selection process conducted, and what criteria were used to select the six companies?

- Why was the bidding process limited to these six companies, and were other  qualified entities excluded?

- How did company’s prior land purchase impact the bidding process, and was this taken into account during the selection process?

- Given the departure of key personnel, is re-tendering the project necessary to ensure fairness and transparency?

By answering these questions and ensuring a transparent and fair process, the Cayman Islands can move forward with a sustainable energy project that will bring affordable energy to the island and its people.
