Tsunami exercise scheduled for Thursday morning

Tsunami Exercise

On March 10, 2022, Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) will be testing the National Emergency Notification System (NENS) in the upcoming Caribe Wave tsunami exercise.

Caribe Wave is the annual tsunami exercise of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is coordinated together with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Caribbean regional emergency management stakeholders including CDEMA (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency).

Purpose and Objective

The purpose of this exercise is to advance tsunami preparedness efforts in the Caribbean and adjacent regions. This year, HMCI will be conducting a radio interrupt test on all local radio stations and triggering a notification on the Blackberry AtHoc emergency App which was recently launched on Friday, March 7th.

The exercise will also provide an opportunity to validate tsunami alert notifications from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) to local tsunami warning focal points, and test aspects of the role of the HMCI Duty Officer. Caribe Wave provides an opportunity to exercise emergency response procedures, identify areas for improvement and build familiarity with the Cayman Islands National Tsunami Plan.

Residents can register for the exercise at www.tsunamizone.org/register/ and to register for the emergency app visit www.nens.gov.ky
