Eta resumes Tropical Storm status - causing severe flooding and Power outages in Grand Cayman

As of the 10 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Eta had 40 mph maximum sustained winds — a bump up of 5 mph from the 7 a.m. advisory when it was a depression — and Eta was headed northeast a bit faster at 17 mph. Eta was about 45 miles west northwest of Grand Cayman.

Shelters Open for Eta

Households in low-lying areas, please note that the CI Red Cross shelter on Huldah Ave, George Town, is open from 9am today (Saturday, 7 October 2020).

The following shelters are open from noon today: John Gray Memorial Church, West Bay; East End, Breakers and North Side Civic Centres.

Eta causes flooding remains a Tropical Depression

Eta is expected to continue to move northeast and strengthen to a possible Tropical Storm and track about 60 miles to the NW of Grand Cayman early this evening, 99 miles NW of Cayman Brac by late Saturday night and over central Cuba by Sunday morning.

The Cayman Islands National Weather Service is advising that Tropical Depression Eta is currently over the waters of the Gulf of Honduras and is expected to move northeast across the Caribbean Sea today, and strengthen to a possible Tropical Storm
