The George Town Yacht Club was filled with applause and heartfelt pride on Friday, 20 March, as family, friends, mentors, and early supporters gathered to celebrate Caymanian sprint sensation Davontè Howell and witness the signing of his new Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) partnership with Cayman Islands Roofing.

The evening opened with a prayer of blessing from Pastor Andrew Ebanks of Agape Family Worship Centre, setting a warm and reverent tone for what became both a contract signing and a celebration of community support behind one of Cayman’s brightest young athletes.

Company owner Michael Malacote explained the purpose of the partnership, saying, “What I’ve done with Davonte is — we are doing a Name Image and Likeness agreement — an NIL agreement… to promote Cayman Islands Roofing products and services.”

He described how he first met Davonte: “I am from north of Knoxville, Tennessee, and about 45 minutes away from the University of Tennessee where Davonte attends and runs track. I saw he was from the Cayman Islands and, of course, my interest here… so we got in contact with him and tried to put an NIL agreement together for Davonte, to support him, and that’s what we’ve done. We have been in business in the Cayman Islands for 21 years.”

Malacote also spoke warmly about Davonte’s character. “The first time I ever met Davonte we sat down and we had lunch at a restaurant in Knoxville, and I picked up, very quickly, that he is a very respectful young man… I told my wife, ‘It went great, and I can tell you that that young man has been raised right… and he’s ahead of his time in age.’”

Davonte Howell, now one of Cayman’s most accomplished young athletes, reflected on his journey since leaving home. “Since I have left Cayman I’ve achieved several goals… I’ve made the Olympic Team, I have made the World Championship Team… I have broken the National Record in the 60 meter, and I have also become the fastest man ever in the month of January in the 60 meter as well, in Clemson, South Carolina.”

He also spoke about balancing academics with elite sport. “My school work is coming on good. I was studying Computer Science… my coach changed my major because of practice times to Human Development and Family Sciences… and I’m going back to Computer Science,” he said.

Howell described the evening as a milestone for Caymanian athletes: “I think this event tonight is a great event in presenting opportunities to other Caymanian athletes… this is a big brand deal that they are investing in me… and how I can promote their brand. This is a big step forward in getting athletes endorsements.”

Among those recognised was former Cayman Olympian Stefan Baraud, who supported Howell in his early years and was invited to stand and be acknowledged.

Hon. Michael Myles, Minister for Caymanian Employment & Immigration, also attended, offering words of congratulations and encouragement.

Howell’s father, Dave Howell, praised the collective effort behind his son’s success. “I want to thank each and every one of you for being part of that team,” he said.

The evening closed with warm embraces, photographs, and a shared sense of pride — a community standing firmly behind a young man sprinting toward an even brighter future.
