The Cayman Motoring Federation (CMF) is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC) in the Cayman Islands, a global road safety initiative that rewards safe and eco-friendly driving. With 69 local participants demonstrating their commitment to better driving habits, the Cayman Islands community collectively achieved a 19% reduction in climate impact compared to the average driver and an impressive average driver score of 1248.5.
The FIA SDC is an innovative international program developed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in partnership with leading risk intelligence company Greater Than. It uses AI-powered analytics to calculate the smartness of driving through several elements: energy efficiency, eco-driving and road safety. Participants receive instant feedback and scoring based on how safely and efficiently they drive. By transforming everyday driving into a measurable and rewarding experience, the FIA SDC encourages motorists to adopt habits that prioritize safety, fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. For the Cayman Islands, where traffic congestion, road safety, and climate action are pressing concerns, the FIA SDC is a timely and relevant initiative. It aligns perfectly with the nation’s growing commitment to sustainable mobility and public safety.

“We’re thrilled to see the enthusiasm of Cayman drivers stepping up to the challenge,” said Jane Scaletta, President of the Cayman Motoring Federation. “This initiative goes beyond friendly competition – it directly contributes to saving lives and reducing emissions. Programs like the FIA SDC are essential to building a safer, more responsible road culture in our islands.”
Top Driver - The SwimmingGP - Tanushree Perry said “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and The Cayman Motoring Federation should be commended for their work in drawing attention to how we drive on a daily basis. This Smart Driving Challenge gave me instant feedback, and really made me think about how I drive and how I could be smarter, safer and more economical. I will definitely take what I have learned into how I continue to drive.”
Top Eco Driver - RJS - Roger Southam noted “Driving safe and smoothly is not optional, it should be the minimum to ensure all road users can enjoy their journey harm free each day. The challenge rewards smooth, safe driving, where prediction is key to keep the roads safe. If it takes the Smart Driving Challenge to achieve that then let’s get everyone on it.”
Tackling Road Safety in the Cayman Islands
Road safety remains a national priority in the Cayman Islands. According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS), the territory recorded nearly 1,500 motor vehicle accidents in 2023, including 170 serious injuries and 9 fatalities. Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving remain key issues.
The Cayman Islands Government has committed to improving these figures through the #RoadToZero campaign, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries through better infrastructure, education, enforcement, and public engagement. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge directly supports this vision by making safer, smarter driving a measurable and rewarding habit.
The CMF encourages all Cayman residents to get involved in the next round of the FIA SDC, improve their driving habits, and be part of a movement that saves lives, reduces emissions, and makes our roads safer for everyone.
