The Cayman Motoring Federation (CMF) hosted a highly successful Motorsport in a Box (MIAB) Slalom Autocross on Saturday, 13 July 2025, transforming the Foster’s Airport Parking Lot into a dynamic motorsport venue. The event brought together 12 drivers, a full complement of marshals, volunteers, and supporters, showcasing the accessibility, excitement, and community spirit of grassroots motorsport.
Slalom autocross is a single-car timed event on a cone-marked course that emphasizes agility, braking, and precise handling — all at modest speeds in a controlled environment. It offers an affordable entry point for newcomers to motorsport while fostering a welcoming community and supporting road safety through improved driver awareness.
The day began with drivers arriving to complete registration and sign the event waiver, followed by a technical inspection of each vehicle to ensure all cars were road-legal, safe, and in good mechanical condition. Once inspections were completed, drivers gathered for a comprehensive safety briefing and course walk, where tactics, clean driving techniques, and course features were discussed. This unique opportunity allowed drivers to visualize their runs and ask questions about the best way to approach the challenging cone-marked slalom course.
Drivers were then assigned grid positions, ensuring a smooth flow throughout the day with one car at a time on the course — a hallmark of autocross safety and organization. The event operated seamlessly thanks to clear communication between the Clerk of the Course, marshals, and timing officials.
The competition itself featured an exciting format: each driver completed three timed runs, with the best two runs combined for their overall score. An automated timing system ensured precise measurement of each run to the hundredth of a second. To encourage precision and control, drivers incurred penalty time points for infractions — 2 seconds added per cone hit and 5 seconds for any drifting or loss of control — underscoring the importance of smooth, safe driving.
Two competitive categories were recognized: Modified Cars and Standard Cars, with first, second, and third-place winners in each.
In addition, a series of fun and notable awards celebrated the fastest run of the day to Adis Kervorkian with 21.259, the most improved, and the day’s memorable moments — including honouring first woman competitor in CMF autocross from outside the CMF Board, a proud milestone in the federation’s drive for inclusivity in motorsport.
“The flow of the day was fantastic — well-organized, exciting, and full of camaraderie,” said Jane Scaletta, President of the Cayman Motoring Federation. “From walking the course together to cheering each other on, this event showed how slalom autocross brings people into motorsport in a fun and safe way. It’s accessible, affordable, and teaches valuable driving skills that translate to safer road use.”
Stephen Chin, Clerk of the Course, noted “We’re here just to teach good driving and have a good time. The foundation of motorsport and we’re trying to grow the sport”.
The CMF thanks Foster’s, all volunteers, the officials, and every competitor for making the event a success. The Federation remains committed to developing grassroots motorsport, promoting road safety, and welcoming more women and youth into the sport.
