Bermuda parliament building
The Bermuda government has tabled legislation to outlaw the posting of what’s known as “revenge porn” online.
The phenomenon is a trend in which people share intimate images on social media with the intent of embarrassing the person portrayed in compromising situations.
Presenting the bill in Bermuda’s House of Assembly, Attorney-General Kathy Lynn Simmons, said: “Weaponising intimate images, created under the trusting sanctity of a romantic relationship, can be used as a tool to inflict revenge when the relationship breaks down.”
The proposed law is based on similar legislation in Canada and Australia.
Another, overseas territory, Montserrat, has also tabled similar legislation as part of a broader cybercrime bill which has been withheld while it undergoes further public consultation.
