The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, has been assassinated.
Breaking news reports from the Haitian capital Port Au Prince on Wednesday morning, quote the country’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph as saying Mr Moise was killed last night in an attack at his home and his wife injured.
He said the attack was carried out by unknown assailants and the president's wife, first lady, Martine Moise, has been taken to hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.
President Moise had been ruling Haiti by decree after legislative elections due in 2018 were delayed due to political wrangling including a constitutional dispute over when his own term ends.
Haiti has been in the grips of prolonged violent political upheavals and a crippling economic crisis.
