Americans love Spice Isle

Regional 10 Jan, 2023 Follow News

Grenada’s natural beauty is one of its many features

St George’s attracts many Americans

Grenada’s tourism figures are performing ahead of virtually every other Caribbean nation, thanks to a huge increase in American visitors.

It had its highest-ever monthly visitor numbers in November - with almost a 20% rise compared to 2019 figures.

The Caribbean is a popular destination for Americans with so many islands to choose from, each offering its own unique appeal, but Grenada is breaking records and beating visitor numbers more than ever before.

Grenada is so popular for Americans they account for more than 60% of visitors. This is helped by its proximity to the United States, regular flight itineraries and an attractive digital nomad visa program.

The Spice Island is a top exporter of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice, bay leaves, and turmeric. The population of 100,000 relies mainly on spices and tourism for employment. Nutmeg was once part of the Grenada’s flag. Its colourful buildings and the people’s personalities are what truly define Grenadian charm.

In St George’s town centre there are many shops selling groceries, pharmaceuticals and hardware, as well as banks, cafes, and one of the island’s many popular chocolate factories, House of Chocolate.

Fort George, built in 1705, is a small bastion fort built on several levels, where each would have given fire cover for the one below. Visitors explore the cannons and enjoy the peace of the derelict buildings, though part of the area is still housed by the Royal Grenada police force.

Grand Anse beach is a long sweep of golden sands, fronted by smart hotels and a few beach bars. Umbrellas is a popular diner, which shows popular sports events. Further west is the quieter Morne Rouge, with a relaxed vibe and rustic beach bar that sells delicious fish tacos. There are other chocolate factories, as well as sugar mills, rum distilleries, hiking trails, diving sites and much more.

Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority, said: “We are laser focused on attracting visitors who want to take advantage of our safe environment, numerous community initiatives and who want to get out and about.”

The final quarter of 2022 saw the return of all international air capacity into the island, including the expansion of British Airways’ schedule from Gatwick, which now features a third flight.

Air Canada now operates a twice-weekly service, Sunwing flies every Sunday from Toronto, while Condor has also returned with a direct weekly service from Frankfurt and Caribbean Airlines now provides a daily service from Trinidad and Tobago.

Roach said they used the pandemic to put in place “a lot of groundwork” by engaging with new PR representation in North America and the UK and strengthened its overseas sales teams. All that effort is paying dividends.
