Chloe Powery-Doxey crowned Miss Universe Cayman Islands

By Christopher Tobutt

It was an evening of celebration under the stars on the back lawn of the National Gallery as Miss Chloe Powery-Doxey was crowned Miss Universe Cayman Islands 2022. It was hosted by Miss Universe Cayman Islands 2018 and 2020, Caitlin Tyson and Mariah Tibbetts.

Chloe was placed as 1st Runner Up last year, and has already represented the Cayman Islands in the 2022 Miss Universe Pageant in New Orleans in December. Whitney Foster was sashed as 1st runner-up, replacing Hayley Grizzel, who opted to leave the Miss Universe Cayman Islands pageant to pursue other endeavours. Tiffany Conolly was crowned at last’s year’s pageant, but it emerged that she had pending charges and so her ability to represent Cayman in international pageantry  was called into question, leading Chloe to take up her duties.

During the evening there were speeches from Minister of Tourism and Ports, Hon. Kenneth Bryan, newly appointed Miss Universe Cayman Islands Chairperson Catherine Tyson-Sewell and Director Derri Dacres.

‘i would like to congratulate the recent appointment of Derri Dacres on her recent appointment as Director of the Cayman Islands by the Miss Universe pageant,” Mr. Bryan said. “i would also like to say Congratulations to Ms. Tyson as she takes the reigns of the pageant. Being a social worker by profession and a mother of a former Miss Cayman Islands Universe, Caitlin Tyson, i am confident that she will continue the good work of empowering young women throughout our three beautiful islands.”

Since becomming a representative of the Miss Cayman Islands Universe pageant last year, Chloe has represented the Cayman Islands locally and internationally, acting as a role model for many of our young people.  She has had a full calendar of appearances and gracefullp participated in important cultural events on our islands. You will have seen her enjoying the events at Pirates Fest, and breaking a sweat during the Department of Childeren and Family Services’ universal Children’s 5k Run/walk. She helped to make the holidays a little more festive by supporting the Pink Ladys at Christmas at the Castle, where Chloe volunteered her time to deliver food to the Elderly.”

Director, Ms. Dacres said, “When i was thinking about someone to take on this role of Chairperson, i knew it had to be someone that was resilent, strong, intellectual, had the fortitude to face any challenge and the tenacity passion and drive to take the pageant to another level. the person that came to mind was Catherine Tyson.”

Chairperson Catherine Tyson-Sewell said, “there’s only one tangible crown to be won that night, but each of us ladies has one on our heads and that should be our main focus throughout that process and even on that night. This organisation has the opportunity to nurture and foster each young woman who comes through our doors in such a way that their life changes as a result.”
