The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) maintained a watching brief overnight at the George Town landfill site following a small fire discovered on Friday, 8 May.
Crews from CIFS and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) made good progress on Saturday, 9th May excavating and damping down the affected area. No smoke or fire is now evident at the scene.
The site was handed back to DEH on Sunday morning and the duty crew from Central Fire Station made periodic checks throughout day for reassurance.
Speaking about the incident, Chief Fire Officer, Paul Walker QFSM said “Our fire strategy for early notification and attendance has worked extremely well in this instance with very little or no impact at all to surrounding residents and businesses. We would like to thank DEH for their continued cooperation and collaboration on this matter.”
