Lionel Messi is Icon’s star ambassador

Icon of the Seas is the world’s largest ship

The world’s largest cruise ship will soon be operating around the Caribbean, giving the region’s tourism a huge boost and none other than Lionel Messi will help promote the gigantic liner.

Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas debuts on 27 January. Messi is the official ambassador of Icon of the Seas. The most decorated player in history is regarded as the greatest player of his era. He has won the Ballon d’Or award eight times and been named TIME’s 2023 Athlete of the Year for ushering in a new era of football in the US after joining Royal Caribbean’s partner and new Leagues Cup champions, Inter Miami, in the summer.

Icon has also marked record-breaking moments. The highly anticipated vacation’s reveal in October 2022 sparked the single largest booking day and highest volume booking week in the cruise line’s history.

As a measure of how huge Icon is, it is seven times bigger than the Titanic and can accommodate 7,600 guests and over 2,000 crew members. It includes the beach retreat, the resort escape and the theme park adventure. With six gigantic waterslides, seven pools, the first neighbourhood designed for young families, more than 40 ways to dine, drink and be entertained, and much more.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to join the Royal Caribbean family to celebrate the arrival of the game-changing Icon of the Seas,” said Messi. “Icon is beyond anything else that’s out there for family vacations.”

Messi’s new role follows the recent announcement of Royal Caribbean and Inter Miami CF’s unprecedented partnership in which the cruise line is the club’s Main Partner and Official Vacation Partner.

“Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of delivering memorable vacations, and it’s set to live up to its name in more ways than one when it changes the vacation industry in January,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International who added that he is delighted that Messi is their Icon and at the official naming on 20 January in Miami.

Each seven-night adventure from Miami is all about island hopping across the Caribbean – like Philipsburg, St Maarten; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas – and at Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. There, the adults-only oasis Hideaway Beach, debuts.
