Joshua O’Garro is fulfilling his hoop dreams
Basketball sensation Joshua O’Garro has just made a historic first for the Cayman Islands after representing Great Britain in two international matches.
Not only has the 24-yearold guard become the first Caymanian selected to the Great Britain Senior National Team and the first Caymanianborn player to start in a FIBA World Cup qualifying game for Great Britain, he is the first to turn pro.
O’Garro secured his place after a series of trials, impressing coaches and earning selection to one of the strongest development systems in international basketball. The programme gives him access to elite competition, professionallevel coaching, and exposure to top European clubs and scouts.
He has also signed his first professional contract with the London Lions, one of the UK’s premier basketball organisations. The Lions compete in Super League Basketball, the highest tier in Great Britain, and in the BKT EuroCup, one of Europe’s top club competitions. The Lions won three of four competitions available last season, including the Super League title.
O’Garro is 6ft 6in and renowned for his versatility on court. He made his England debut against Lithuania, and last week he faced Iceland, both proud moments for his family and for Cayman basketball. Although Great Britain lost both games, O’Garro still played well.
Cayman Basketball President, Collin Anglin, said the achievement is bigger than about just one player. He said: “Each time a Caymanian athlete reaches a new level, it shines a light on the talent coming out of the Cayman Islands and shows young athletes that scholarships, international competition, and professional careers are within reach.”
This level of competition and development available through the European circuit is one of the strongest pathways in the world.
The O’Garro family, who steeped in basketball, expressed gratitude to the coaches, mentors, teammates, and supporters who have helped shape Joshua’s journey, and hope his story inspires the next generation of Caymanian athletes to dream big.
