Local News 28 Apr, 2025 Follow News

The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) proudly announces Culturama 2025, a dynamic cultural showcase coinciding with the institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations. This milestone event will take place at the F.J. Harquail Theatre on May 17 and 18, 2025, offering an immersive experience that celebrates Caymanian heritage through dance, music, and storytelling.

Culturama 2025 delves into themes of displacement, environmental consciousness, and community healing, reflecting the evolving narrative of the Cayman Islands. Audiences will be treated to a rich tapestry of performances blending folk, modern/contemporary, religious, and popular dance forms. The production features 25 talented dancers, a 15-member choir, and live accompaniment by the Pandemix Steelpan band and a full orchestra, creating a powerful fusion of tradition and innovation.

This year’s Culturama follows the UCCI Dance Company’s acclaimed performance at the Jamaica Dance Umbrella (JDU) 2025, where they represented the Cayman Islands for the fourth consecutive year. Their piece, “Moments,” co-choreographed by Joshua McLean and Dr. MoniKa Lawrence, received high praise, with JDU organizer Michael Holgate noting, “Your artistry, energy, and dedication added so much brilliance to this year’s festival, making it one of the best we’ve ever had.”

“Culturama 2025 is more than a performance; it’s a reflection of our journey, our resilience, and our vibrant culture,” said Dr. MoniKa Lawrence, Artistic Director of the UCCI Dance Company. “As we celebrate 50 years of UCCI, this production stands as a testament to our commitment to nurturing talent, fostering creativity, and honouring our heritage.”

In alignment with UCCI’s commitment to education and community involvement, free matinee performances will be offered to schoolchildren on May 15 and 16 at 10:30am, as a way of fostering cultural education and appreciation among the youth.  UCCI’s marketing students are also actively participating in the production process, gaining practical experience in promotion and advertising while earning academic credits.

Public performances will take place on May 17 and 18 at 7:00pm at the F.J. Harquail Theatre. Tickets are KYD $25 and available via EventPro: Culturama 2025 by UCCI Dance Company - EventPro

Dr. MoniKa Lawrence, concluded, “Culturama 2025 is not just an event; it’s a celebration of UCCI’s legacy and a love letter to the culture, history, and creative brilliance of the Cayman Islands. We invite the entire community to join us as we mark this historic milestone.”
