Arsenal believe they can retain the Premier League
Arsenal are focusing on Juventus forward, Kenan Yildiz, as their new No 1 target on the left wing, after their improbable bid to coax Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid failed.
Arsenal pushed hard to bring Vinicius Junior to north London in what would have been the biggest signing in their history, and even the most sensational signing ever in the Premier League.
Ultimately, The Gunners’ efforts fell short, with the Brazilian going on to sign lucrative new terms at Real Madrid.
That was the latest in a long line of transfer failures for Arsenal for an elite left winger. Chelsea hijacked their move for Morgan Rogers, and interest in Yan Diomande came to nothing once Real Madrid stepped in. If Bradley Barcola leaves PSG this month, it’ll be to Liverpool.
Hence that is why Mikel Arteta is now keen to sign Yildiz, Juve’s 21-year-old golden boy who plays either on the left wing or behind the striker. He bagged 10 goals and seven assists in Serie A last term.
Understandably, Juventus do not want to sell Yildiz, unless an exceptional offer arrives, well above £86m ($100m).
Meanwhile, Arteta said the signing of Bruno Guimaraes will help Arsenal go to the «next level».
The signing of Guimaraes for £75m ($86m) from Newcastle United meant the 28-year-old midfielder was introduced to the fans inside Emirates Stadium before the Borussia Dortmund match.
Guimaraes was not included in the squad for the 3-2 loss to Dortmund but was likely to be involved against Como on Wednesday. His arrival means Arteta now has plenty of choice in midfield with Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino all options.
Arteta gushed over Brazilian Guimaraes as they look to defend their Premier League title and possibly win the Champions League for the first time after going so close last term.
“On the pitch, versatility to play in two different positions in relation to what we want or the opponent does,” he said.
“A player which obviously has tremendous timing and intuition to win the ball back and progress play very, very fast.”
