Caleb Williams silenced his critics
The NFL’s Week 1 games threw up some amazing scores, none more so than Chicago Bears defeating Carolina Panthers 59–37.
Caleb Williams threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 65 yards and two more scores as the Bears beat the Panthers in the highest-scoring season opener in NFL history.
Williams proved all the doubters wrong. The former USC star wasted little time in showing why he is one of the most celebrated quarterback prospects of the past decade. He generated 248 yards of offense in the first half alone.
Bears running back D’Andre Swift, who received a $33.75m contract extension last week, ran for 124 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns, while Kyle Monangai had 100 yards rushing, including a 61-yard touchdown burst.
Josh Allen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer with 1:36 remaining to lift the Buffalo Bills to a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in a back-and-forth season opener.
Carson Wentz came in after Kyler Murray’s first-quarter concussion in his Minnesota Vikings debut and helped the Vikings in a spirited comeback to beat the Green Bay Packers 39-22.
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart was excellent, throwing three touchdowns; Cam Skattebo rushed for another as the Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-20. The Giants’ running game was excellent, with the team gaining 165 yards on the ground. They also converted nine of their 11 third downs.
Jalen Hurts threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns, and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Moro Ojomo stuffed the Washington Commanders’ attempt at a tying two-point conversion with 1:01 remaining as Philadelphia squeaked past Washington 24-22.
New Orleans Saints QB Tyler Shough threw an incomplete pass in the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt, allowing the Detroit Lions to escape with a thrilling 31-30 win in overtime over the New Orleans Saints. Saints coach Kellen Moore chose to go for the win instead of tying the game with 1:34 left in overtime after his team came back from a three-touchdown deficit in the third quarter and allowed a touchdown on the opening possession of the extra period.
