Breaking the “Body Debt™” Cycle: A Smarter Approach to Workplace Performance

Laura Ribbins

What if one of the biggest threats to productivity is sitting right in front of us—literally?

At the Chamber’s upcoming Lunch & Learn on 18 June Laura Ribbins, Holistic Wellness Strategist, international fitness expert, and CEO of Fitness Connection, will unpack “Body Debt™: The Hidden Cost of Sitting on Your Business.” This engaging session explores how modern work habits are quietly impacting energy, focus, and overall performance. The session is free, and a light lunch is provided.

Ribbins is also the creator of Body Debt™ and the driving force behind Fitness Connection, a Cayman fitness and aquatic centre that has served the community for more than 30 years. Known for teaching generations of Cayman families to swim—from babies to adults—she brings a deeply practical, community-rooted perspective to wellbeing, helping people of all ages and abilities embrace movement, improve health, and build lifelong wellness habits.

According to Ribbins: “Recent findings from the Cayman Islands STEPS 2023 Report show that nearly the entire population has at least one health risk factor, with little improvement over the past decade. In practical terms, many employees are operating below their full potential—often without realising it.” Ribbins introduces the concept of Body Debt™—the cumulative impact of prolonged sitting, poor movement habits, and lifestyle imbalance. Like financial debt, it builds over time, leading to fatigue, brain fog, reduced resilience, and lower workplace engagement. “Most people don’t realize they’re accumulating what I call Body Debt™ every single day through prolonged sitting, stress, and lack of movement,” says Ribbins. “The good news is that small, consistent changes can dramatically improve energy, focus, productivity, and long-term health. Healthy employees aren’t just happier — they’re more engaged, resilient, and better equipped to perform at their best.” The session also tackles the growing recognition that “sitting is the new smoking,” highlighting the risks associated with sedentary work and what businesses can do to address them.

Importantly, this is not just about awareness. Attendees will walk away with:

• A clear understanding of how Body Debt™ affects performance

• Insight into the link between energy, focus, and productivity

• Simple, practical tools to improve daily habits

• An interactive movement “reset” they can apply immediately

The message is straightforward: when people feel better, they perform better. By making small, intentional changes, businesses can boost productivity, reduce absenteeism, and create more energised, engaged teams.

This session is ideal for business owners, managers, and professionals in desk-based roles looking for practical ways to improve both wellbeing and performance.
