Cayman Islands Folk Singers to Host First Concert Series in Five Years

Fans of the Cayman Islands Folk Singers are in for a treat this month when the group hosts its first concert series in over five years. “Memories of Yesteryears” is the theme of the event which takes place from Friday, 29 October to Sunday, 31 October at the Harquail Theatre and on Saturday, 6 November in Cayman Brac at the Agriculture Grounds. The shows will feature audience favourites such as “Munzie’s Boat”, “Chip Up Potato” and “Come Back Home” as well as songs never performed by the group before.

Organisers say concertgoers can look forward to an evening that will evoke delightful memories of a different time and celebrate the music, culture and traditions of the Cayman Islands.

“The line-up of songs for the upcoming concert has been selected to take audiences on a virtual maritime expedition with stops at several of the ports Caymanian seafarers of decades past travelled, sending or bringing gifts and stories home to their families. These men of the sea experienced many adventures and hardships while abroad, but their hearts inevitably drew them back to their beloved Cayman Islands where the women who had stayed behind had continued to build and nurture their homegrown culture. It is this spirit of adventure and love of country and family that we hope to capture in the performances,” said Marcia Muttoo, CNCF Managing Director and member of the Folk Singers.

In 2009, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) formed the Cayman Islands Folk Singers (CIFS), a company of amateur singers and musicians dedicated primarily to preserving, celebrating and propagating the musical traditions of the Cayman Islands. The group exists to bring the people of the Cayman Islands folk music works of the highest possible artistic and technical standards and production values and works that are reflective of the Caymanian image and appreciative of its place in the Caribbean region and the wider world. In the years since its inception, the group has been showcasing Cayman’s rich musical heritage, telling ‘the Caymanian story’ through song. The Folk Singers have an impressive repertoire of Caymanian composition, as well as beloved songs from around the region.

Show times are 8pm on Friday, 29 and Saturday, 30 October and 6pm on Sunday, 31 October. The Brac performance will take place at 7:00pm on Saturday, 6 November. Tickets cost $15 per person and are available for purchase through the CNCF office, located on the grounds of the Harquail Theatre. Admission is free for kids under five-years old. Gathering restrictions and social distancing protocols will be observed.
