Cayman men’s hockey squad set for 7v7 international challenge in Florida
The Cayman Islands men’s field hockey team will head to Florida next week to compete in the Tampa Cup, with players eager to test themselves against strong opposition and continue raising the profile of the sport on the international stage.
The tournament, which takes place on 24-25 October in Tampa, will bring together representative teams from across the United States and the Caribbean, providing Cayman with another valuable opportunity to compete against experienced opponents.
Led by team captain Liam Conradie, the squad has spent recent months preparing through regular training sessions and local competition, with players focused on delivering a strong performance in the fast-paced 7v7 format.
For many of the players, the tournament represents far more than a weekend of competition.
“Every opportunity to compete overseas helps us grow as players and as a team,” said Conradie. “Playing against different teams and styles of hockey accelerates development, strengthens team chemistry and gives us valuable experience that we can bring back to the local game.”
Team manager Nick Hemus believes the tournament will provide an excellent benchmark for the squad. “We know we’ll face quality opposition, but the players have worked hard and are excited for the challenge,” Hemus said. “ Our focus is on competing well, making smart decisions on the field and continuing to improve as a team throughout the tournament.”
The team will feature a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, with several athletes expected to take on larger roles as the programme continues to develop.
Club vice-president Charlie Jackson said overseas tournaments remain an important part of the sport’s long-term development in Cayman. “These events are invaluable for our players and for the sport as a whole,” Jackson said. “They expose us to different styles of hockey, challenge players to perform under pressure and provide experiences that are difficult to replicate at home. We’re looking forward to seeing the team test itself against strong competition and continue its development.”
