Matthew Dodson, 14, gained tremendous experience

The Cayman Islands national team competed at the 2026 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in the Bahamas last week and finished in a respectable sixth place.

Puerto Rico were the overall champions (58 points) with Bermuda runner-up (47) and Dominican Republic in third place (41)

It was a great week of golf, teamwork and Cayman pride. Team Cayman started strongly, highlighted by Andrew Jarvis firing an outstanding opening-round 66, with Luke Dodson following with an even-par round and Payten Wight carding a +2 74. On Day 2, Samantha Widmer had a highlight round of 77.

The course provided a tough test, playing approximately 6,850 yards for the men and 6,150 yards for the women.

Coach Kevin Hinton, now in his fifth year coaching Cayman at CAGC, praised the fantastic team spirit throughout. And while there was plenty of serious golf, 14-year-old Matthew Dodson was making the most of the hotel’s water slides.

The Bahamas Golf Federation and the Caribbean Golf Association showed outstanding hospitality.

Puerto Rico capped an exceptional championship in claiming the Arthur Zaide Trophy as Overall Champions, while also winning the George Teale Cup (Ladies Team Championship) and the Hoerman Cup (Men’s Team Championship).

Kelvin Hernandez of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men›s golf team earned the win on Thursday at the Royal Blue Golf Course in Nassau.
Hernandez captured the Best Gross Hoerman Cup Individual at the event behind rounds of 71-68-69 for an eight-under-par (208). He won the event by a five-under-par lead, finishing ahead of Christopher Richards Jr., who was representing Trinidad and Tobago with a three-under-par (213) final score.
