Now We Play: Mental Fitness for Everyday Life

Cayman-based psychotherapist, speaker and Infinite Mindcare Founder Sutton Burke, MS, LCPC, will release her first book, Now We Play: Mental Fitness for Everyday Life, on September 23.

Blending personal stories, evidence-based therapeutic approaches, spirituality and practical tools, Now We Play explores how people can move through anxiety, stress, overthinking and difficult emotions without waiting for things to become easier first.

Burke describes mental fitness as something people strengthen over time, much like physical fitness.

“Mental fitness isn’t about never feeling anxious, stressed or overwhelmed,” Burke says. “It’s about learning how to feel what we feel, respond more intentionally and return to ourselves when things get hard.”

The book explores emotional regulation, perfectionism, relationships, vulnerability, identity, shame, nervous system regulation, spirituality and the pressure many high-functioning people experience while appearing completely fine on the outside.

It is written especially for people who may already have insight into themselves, have done some personal work or know many of the “right” tools, yet still find themselves overthinking, moving too fast, performing, people-pleasing or feeling disconnected from the lives they have built.

“A lot of the people I wrote this for already know a lot,” Burke says. “They’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, maybe gone to therapy. The gap isn’t always knowing. It’s practicing until what you know actually becomes how you live.”

Burke is also clear that Now We Play is not a replacement for therapy, medical care or individualized mental health treatment. Rather, it offers reflections and tools that can complement therapy or support ongoing personal growth.

At the centre of the book is a larger question: What if the goal was never to fix yourself, but to become more available for the life you are already living?

Burke, who has been on island since 2008, and founded Infinite Mindcare in Cayman in January 2017 and has spent nearly two decades working in mental health. She says the book grew out of both her clinical work and her own personal experiences.

“This book is about being in your life now, rather than waiting for anxiety, stress or discomfort to disappear first,” Burke says. “Life keeps on lifing. Hard things are going to happen. The work is learning how to move through all of it while still being able to connect, feel, repair, experience joy and play.”

Throughout the book, Burke shares ways to sit with difficult emotions, slow down, pay attention to the body, strengthen relationships, connect with spirituality and create more space for joy and meaning.

To mark the release, Burke is hosting several public events in Cayman.

On September 26 from 3–5pm at Book Nook, she will host a Meet the Author event featuring an interactive vulnerability game and is inviting everyone to come play.

Visitors will choose a card and participate in a brief exercise centred around vulnerability, connection, discomfort or simply being human together. The event will also include a launch-day raffle with prizes including a hotel stay, massage, brunch and other local experiences.

On October 4 from 10–11am at Next Chapter, Burke will host an Author Q&A and brief talk featuring practical mental fitness tools for everyday life.

The Kindle edition of Now We Play will be available on Amazon for USD $2.99, with paperback and hardcover editions also available.

“One of my dreams is to see whether our Cayman community can help a locally written book reach an Amazon bestseller list,” Burke says. “Of course I want people to read the book, but I also want this launch to create conversations, bring people together and encourage them to actually use these ideas.”

For Burke, the message behind Now We Play extends beyond mental health.

“My mission has always been to connect people to the beauty of being alive,” she says. “This book is an invitation to stop standing on the sidelines analysing life and get back on the court. We’re going to play inside the hard. We’re going to practice being human together. One life. Let’s really be in it.”

Now We Play: Mental Fitness for Everyday Life will be released September 23 in Kindle, paperback and hardcover formats.
