Caymanian Austin Turpin is making great strides in the sport of basketball and has been on an impressive journey at the world renowned IMG Academy, where he recently received Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours.

Now 16 years old, Austin will attend the IMG Academy up until his graduation in 2029, having started in the 2024 - 2025 season.

For context, IMG Academy is known around the world as an elite preparatory boarding school and sports training facility in Bradenton, Florida, United States.

Over the years notable athletes to have passed through IMG include a who’s who of professional sports and student athletics placing the school among the top in the world for producing top tier performers in a number of sports.

Caymanian Times had an opportunity to speak with Austin Turpin to learn more about his journey and how he ended up at the prestigious institution coming from a little Islands nation like the Cayman Islands.

“I attended camp two summers in a row, each time hoping to earn a spot at the school. In my second year, that dream began to take shape—I was pulled aside and invited to join for the 2024–2025 school year,” he explained.

He added that the journey was not an easy one but hard work and dedication to his craft paid off in the long run.

“I arrived with the expectation of making the top middle school team, but my confidence wasn’t where it needed to be. The coaches recognized this and placed me on the second team to help me grow,” he remarked.

“I took that as motivation—and by the end of the season, I had earned the MVP title. When the regular season ended and AAU began, I was honored to be called up to compete with one of the JV teams,” added the MVP.

As part of the recognition for becoming the most valuable player, the distinction  was given to Austin Turpin after averaging the most points, rebounds and assists on his team for the year.

He also serves as the Captain of the team.

In explaining his love for the game of basketball and how it came to be, he said it unfolded very naturally.

“I have played a lot of sports and I just ended up loving the game of basketball,” he revealed.

Austin says his focus now is to continue taking his game to the next level and looking forward to playing in college. He is still undecided on where he will pursue his secondary education.

His advice for other youngsters who have dreams of following a career in sports is to, “Trust God and Train hard. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do whatever it is that you dream about doing.”
