CBC RESUMES INSURANCE CHECKS FOR VEHICLES COLLECTED AT THE PORT

The Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) is advising the public that, with immediate effect, persons collecting imported vehicles from the Port Authority that are intended to be driven from the port must present proof of valid motor vehicle insurance before the vehicle can be released.

This requirement aligns with section 3(1) of the Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act (2012 Revision), which requires a valid insurance policy to be in force before a vehicle is used on a road.

CBC has resumed this check at the point of release to support road safety and to help enforce existing vehicle insurance requirements. The requirement is not new; however, people collecting imported vehicles should ensure valid insurance is in place before going to the port, to avoid delays.

Importers, or their authorised representatives, must present proof of valid motor vehicle insurance to the releasing officer when collecting a vehicle that will be driven from the port. Where valid proof of insurance cannot be provided, the vehicle must be collected and transported from the port by tow truck.

CBC encourages persons importing vehicles to make the necessary insurance arrangements before collection to avoid delays in the release of their vehicles.
