The Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service (“CBC”) has announced the occurrence of two separate drug seizures and associated arrests.
These two recent matters occurred at the Owen Roberts International Airport on Friday, 31st March and on Sunday 2nd April, 2023. Both matters involve significant quantities of ganja, mushrooms, THC infused gummies and THC vape cartridges.
The Director of CBC Charles Clifford while acknowledging and commending the perseverance, duty of care and vigilance exhibited by CBC Officers at the controls, voiced his concerns with the frequency of such seizures and the obvious demand for illegal substances which exist in the Cayman Islands. He stated, “We must never lose focus on the severe impact that illegal drug supply and consumption has had and continues to have on the overall health and wellness of the general public.” Mr. Clifford continued, “Over the years the ganja plant has been reengineered and is now much more potent and risky than it once was.”
Minister for Border Control & Labour Dwayne Seymour said, “Thank you to the CBC Officers for their diligence and skilled approach by seizing and stopping these illegal substances from entering our community. Their dedication to securing our borders is very much appreciated.”
The recovery of the illegal substances and paraphernalia have resulted in the arrest of three persons thus far. The matter is being investigated by the CBC Investigations Section.
