Fifty-five cruise ship passengers feared drowning
A Caribbean cruise ship saw 55 passengers forced to leap overboard from a catamaran when it sank during an excursion in Dominican Republic.
Cruise operator, TUI, said an investigation has been launched. A catamaran was transporting passengers from the Mein Schiff 1 cruise ship during its stop at the Dominican Republic on Sunday when it quickly became submerged, leaving all 55 passengers with no other choice but to leap into the water. The group outing on the 12-metre craft called Boca de Yuma ended with holidaymakers floating in the sunshine across Samana Bay, before Dominican Navy personnel mounted a rescue operation.
The sinking is thought to have been caused by a leak in the hull, though investigations are ongoing. All passengers safely returned to the German cruiser Mein Schiff 1 after the incident.
The cruise ship, which can accommodate up to 4,000 guests, continued its journey as planned, with Jamaica being the vessel’s next destination.
