The Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) is happy to announce Older Person’s Month (OPM) 2024, a celebration of our older citizens and their invaluable contributions to the Cayman Islands. This year, we are delighted to introduce the 2024 OPM Ambassadors - Carmen Eugenia Conolly, Edney McLean, and Wanda Tatum - who exemplify the spirit of this year’s theme, “Age Out Loud.”
Hon. Deputy Premier and Minister of Investment, Innovation and Social Development, André Ebanks shares, “As we celebrate International Day of Older Persons and launch Older Persons Month this October, I’m proud to introduce this year’s theme, ‘Age Out Loud.’ It’s an honour to recognise our 2024 Ambassadors - Carmen Eugenia Conolly, Edney McLean, and Wanda Tatum - who embody this powerful theme. It’s essential that we safeguard and empower our older persons, encouraging them to stay active and engaged through social and educational events like Older Persons Month. Together, let’s celebrate their contributions and ensure they continue to thrive as vital members of our community.”
Meet the 2024 Older Person’s Month Ambassadors:
Carmen Eugenia Conolly, from East End, is a shining example of community service and cultural preservation. Born in 1936 in Honduras and raised in Grand Cayman, Carmen has spent her life serving her community, especially through the East End United Church and the East End Seniors Program. Her talents in needlework, thatch work, and cooking have earned her numerous awards, and her dedication to preserving Caymanian heritage reflects the essence of “Ag Out Loud.” Her achievements have been recognized with the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honor and membership in the Order of the Cayman Islands (MCI).
Edney McLean, also from East End, has been an active community leader since his youth. Born in 1953, Edney has spearheaded efforts to preserve his district’s heritage through initiatives like Heritage Day events and local traditions such as the Christmas Eve bonfires. His dream of establishing a Memorial Museum to showcase East End’s history and his commitment to education and community beautification embody the spirit of “Ag Out Loud.” His motto, “I want to leave my district better than I found it,” defines his dedication.
Wanda Tatum, from Cayman Brac, has dedicated over 34 years to civil service and community development. Born in 1957, Wanda has played key roles in local education boards and founded the Cayman Brac Business and Professional Women’s Club. Her leadership in church, advocacy for the elderly, and numerous awards, including the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honor, demonstrate her deep commitment to her community. Wanda exemplifies “Age Out Loud” by living with purpose and serving others throughout her life.
Why “Age Out Loud” Matters
The theme “Age Out Loud” is about redefining ageing in our society. It encourages us to see ageing as a time of growth, contribution, and active participation. Our older citizens are living longer, staying connected, and continuing to make significant contributions to their communities. By empowering our seniors, we not only enhance their quality of life but also enrich our entire country. The DCFS is committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of older persons and ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to thrive.
