Derek Larner made a huge contribution to Cayman athletics

Laura and Scarlett Larner are keeping his memory strong

The Derek Larner Memorial Run is held for the second time this weekend in honour of the great athlete and track coach Derek Larner who died of cancer, aged 56, in 2021.

Whether you’re aiming to set a personal best or simply enjoy a run or walk with friends, there’s an option for everyone.

Sponsored by Artex Risk Solutions, the event is on Sunday 26 October. Participants can enter:

• 5K – $25 adults/$10 children (12 and under)

• 10K – $35

• Half relay – $65

• Half marathon – $50

It starts and finishes at Cricket Square from 6:30-9:30am and is organised by Race Caribbean.

Proceeds will support Jasmine and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, two organisations that were deeply meaningful to Derek and his family.

January’s inaugural Derek Larner Memorial Run saw over 600 people honour his memory and support two amazing causes.

Derek is survived by his widow, Laura, and their daughter, Scarlett. Laura said: “Scarlett and I were so moved to see over 600 people come together in January to remember Derek and raise funds for CICS and Jasmine.

“The love and support from our community means so much to us. As we look ahead, we’re excited to launch a special kids’ entry fee to get more families out running together, plus a donation-only option on the race registration page for those who can’t join us on the day but still want to support the cause.

“Derek would be so proud to see his legacy inspiring people of all ages to run in community and for two charities close to our hearts. Whether the kids are jogging beside you or crossing the finish line on their own, they’ll be part of something special.”
