Downward trend in new COVID-19 cases continues

The downward trend in new COVID-19 cases continued last week according to the latest situational report released by the Ministry of Health tonight (Wednesday, 16 February).

In Epidemiological Week, also known as Epi. Week, 6 (6 February – 12 February), there were 979 new cases of COVID-19. This was just under 700 cases less than were reported in the previous Epi. Week (30 January-5 February) and continued a decline in weekly new cases that had been evident since late-January.

Officials noted that 4,716 tests were conducted in Epi.Week 6 compared to 6,810 tests in Epi.Week 5. and 7,930 tests in Epi.Week 4.

Although no new deaths were registered this week, the total number of deaths since the start of the epidemic in March 2020, is now 17, as additional, retrospective information was gathered and verified against previously held records.

During Epi. Week 6, there were less hospital inpatients going through the two main hospitals in the Cayman Islands (Health Services Authority and Health City Cayman Islands) compared to the previous week.

The arrival of paediatric vials tomorrow (Thursday, 17 February), from the United Kingdom Government, signals the imminent start of a booster campaign for children aged five to 11 years old, which will take place alongside the booster campaign.
