Editorial: Red Cross finally reopens

This week the Cayman Islands Red Cross Hurricane Shelter and HQ building has finally reopened after a much-needed renovation process that has taken two years to complete. Headed by Red Cross Director Jondo Obi, the Cayman Islands Red Cross is manned by a team of staff and volunteers, who do an incredible job running the Thrift Shop, giving first aid and basic water rescue training, providing sexual health and free HIV screenings, and giving vital child protection education. They give first aid assistance at a whole host of events across the islands and in the case of an emergency event, they offer education and advice about how to prepare for an emergency as well as what to do if one occurs. They are, in fact, one of the most important resources Cayman has when it comes to dealing with a wide range of urgent needs within the community. So, we encourage everyone to take a look in your closets, bag up unused clean items and send them to the Red Cross. Pay a visit to their Thrift Shop and purchase a book or an item of clothing, and when you see a Red Cross volunteer collecting for any number of worthy causes they support, dig deep into your wallet and make sure you give some love to this incredibly important organisation. If you want to find out more about volunteering, contact them at vrm@redcross.org.ky or call (345) 949-6785 ext. 1 or (345) 925-2251.
