Just before 6 AM on Monday, 21 April, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre dispatched police and other emergency services to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a cyclist.
It was reported that the cyclist, along with a blue Subaru Forrester, was travelling along Bodden Town Road, both heading east, when the cyclist was struck by the Subaru Forrester in the vicinity of Lake Destiny Drive. The driver of the vehicle then proceeded to flee the scene of the collision and proceeded to collide with a car that was parked off the roadway a short distance away, in the vicinity of Lake View Drive, before coming to a final stop in the concrete wall of a nearby residence. The driver then exited his vehicle and fled the second collision on foot.
The police, along with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS), attended the location to assist with this collision. The cyclist was transported to the hospital by ambulance immediately following the collision, where he was being treated for serious and life-threatening injuries. The 39-year-old man who resided in Bodden Town succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced deceased. The RCIPS expresses condolences to the family of the deceased.
The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man of Bodden Town, later attended the hospital by private vehicle with injuries that appeared to be a result of the collision. He was subsequently arrested by the police on suspicion of manslaughter, causing death by dangerous driving and other traffic offences concerning this incident. He remains in police custody as he continues to receive treatment at the hospital.
This incident is being investigated by the police, and officers from CIFS assisted with on-scene investigation and the clearing of the roadway immediately following the collision.
